How it all began:

A native French speaker, Rochette grew up in the Quebec village of Ile-Dupas (pop: 500). She tried skating for the first time as a four-year-old when her father, a youth hockey coach, brought her to a rink to play. "When I started, I couldn't skate -- I was just walking on the ice. I couldn't glide," Rochette says. "I remember, he's the first one who taught me how to actually glide." She began formal lessons when she was five, and at age 16 she moved to Montreal to train, moving in with a host family.
